Here's every class description for our current schedule. Get a sense of the breadth and depth of the circus training you can get.


Build on the foundations and take the Chinese Acrobatic tradition to the next level. This class offers more detailed training on more advanced forms of stretching, handstands, conditioning, and tumbling.

 

Prerequisite: Instructor Approval

 

 

Designed to give students the strength and flexibility needed to build a strong contortion foundation, this class focuses on enhancing flexibility through Mongolian-based contortion technique, personalized stretching for individual needs, and active flexibility exercises. This 2 hour class will prepare you to safely learn chest stands, elbow stands, and over splits, or just help to make you have beautiful lines while upside down or in the air.

 

 

Learn to fly, swing, and spin in Aerial Arts for Youth. Students will learn the basics in Trapeze, Tissu, and Hoop while they develop strength, flexibility, and grace.

Intended for new students, Aerial Conditioning: Level 1 is an endurance and strength-building class that targets core, arm, and leg strength, while developing cardiovascular and muscular endurance. This 90-minute class mixes ground conditioning with stretching and apparatus training to work the entire body, build up a sweat, and tone muscles for maximum strength and control. Students will work singly and in partnership on apparatus such as Static Trapeze, Rope, and Wall Rack to develop confidence in their own strength and coordination. Aerial Conditioning: Level 1 is a drop-in class, which can be started at any time by people of any age and fitness level.

Aerial Conditioning: Level 2 is designed for intermediate and advanced students who have completed Aerial Conditioning: Level 1, or have previous aerial training and who wish to develop additional strength-based technique on aerial apparatus. This class builds on the strengthening curriculum from Aerial Conditioning: Level 1 to include moves based on timing, momentum and rhythm. Students will work singly and in partnership on apparatus such as Static Trapeze, Rope, Tissu, and Wall Rack to develop confidence in their personal strength and coordination.

 

Prerequisite: Instructor approval.

 

 

This class is open to all skills levels, and ages 7 and above.  In Flying Trapeze, a “flyer” swings from one trapeze to another (“bar to bar”), or from one trapeze to the hands of a “catcher” hanging from another trapeze (“bar to catcher”). The latter technique, which is the most common, is taught at Circus Center.

 

This class is open to flyers ages 7 and above of all skill levels, from the first-timer to the seasoned pro. It introduces students to all aspects of flying: familiarization with the rigging, terminology of the trapeze, and performance of basic tricks.


Guidelines and Information


• Maximum weight: Our instructors, who vary in size, can safely belay up to 250lbs.
• Maximum waist: Our safety belts are designed to accommodate waists up to size 38.
• Punctuality strongly encouraged.
• Loose or street attire discouraged, close-fitting athletic wear suggested.
• Glasses discouraged, but if worn, must be break-resistant and secured with elastic straps

This class focuses on Chinese pole skills that develop strength and endurance. Build strength and dexterity as you learn to climb, slide, and hold poses on the acrobatic pole.

Skills include monkey climbing, regular climbing, sitting, star, fish, and variations of the standard handstand and pull ups. Students proceed at their own pace with personalized instruction.

 

*Please Note* This class requires specific shoes- The Feiyue martial arts shoe is one example of an acceptable shoe and can be purchased inexpensively on Amazon.com.

We have sizes 36, 38, 39, 40, 43, and 45 to loan, but we cannot guarantee that a particular size will be available in a class.

Get a full-body workout using movements, techniques, and skills taken from circus, parkour, and gymnastics! This fun and intense circus circuit training combines interval training with circus arts conditioning followed by a brief stretch. Circus Bootcamp will build strength, endurance, and coordination in a way that can be scaled and modified for all fitness levels.

Every Friday night from 7-9pm, Circus Center holds a FREE open play session where you can experiment with juggling, tightwire, rolla bolla, feather balancing, clowning, and more in a casual setting, under the supervision of our instructors. Did we mention Circus Skills Jam is FREE?

Everyone age 8 and older is welcome, however, all students under age 18 must have a parent sign our general release form, and children under the age of 15 must be accompanied by parents at all times.

 

 

Contortion 1 uses Mongolian-based contortion technique to enhance leg and back flexibility and strength. Throughout this 2 hour class, students will work on improving their passive and active leg flexibility, as well as starting work on basic contortion skills such as chest stand and elbow stand. Participants will also learn and develop personalized routines for stretching their legs and back that they can work on outside of class.

 

Prerequisite: Instructor approval

 

 

Grounded in Mongolian-based contortion technique, this class focuses on building routines for stretching, movement through contortion poses, and higher level contortion skills. Contortion 2 is designed to build endurance, as well as continuing to develop flexibility and strength. Students will be able to start working on poses such as Triple Fold and handstands while refining the skills learned in Contortion 1.

Whether you want to prepare for more advanced skill-based classes or are just seeking an intelligent workout, this class is for you. You will refine your awareness of alignment and be challenged while developing the strength, stability and flexibility needed for the demands of circus training.

 

 

This class focuses on stretching exercises, concentrating on the hips and lower back, to reduce pain and increase range of motion. It’s perfect for people who sit during the day and want to stretch out their lower bodies. All body types and flexibility levels are encouraged to join.

Flying Trapeze 1 is for the intermediate student. Students should have experience with Flying Trapeze at Circus Center, but may not be ready to leave the board unassisted as in Flying Trapeze 2. Class has 3 instructors and 8 students like All Levels Flying Trapeze, but without total beginners, it is more fast-paced.

 

Prerequisite: Able to do a one-handed take off (or deemed close to that milestone by an instructor)



With an emphasis on the development of skills needed for the performance of a flying trapeze act, including advanced tricks and flying without safety lines, this class in an accelerated course for motivated students who are physically prepared for rigorous intensive training.


Prerequisite: Able to leave the board unassisted

Working on the only flying trapeze rig in San Francisco, our expert instructors will introduce students to the safety practices and fundamental techniques of this spectacular circus art. Give your kid the gift of flight!

 
 

Handstand is the foundation of all acrobatics. This class is for more advanced students, exploring many variations of handstands including planks, one handed handstands, headstands and handstand pushups.

 

Prerequisite: Instructor approval

 
 

Classes focus on building upper body strength, developing flexibility, and basic static figures.

Students learn hanging and contortion positions, hoop rotation, and body drops and catches.

This is the most advanced level of Circus Center’s Hoop classes. It focuses on dynamics, contortion, and strength-related tricks, as well as on the combination of movements into sequences that will lead to future act composition.

Learn the foundations of the ancient Chinese acrobatic tradition. These techniques are the building blocks for all circus arts. Focus is on integration, flexibility, alignment, strength, and control, with intensive work on kicks, stretching, handstands, and tumbling.

Intro to Contortion uses Mongolian-based contortion technique to enhance leg and back flexibility and strength. Throughout this 2 hour class, students will work on improving their passive and active leg flexibility, as well as starting work on basic contortion skills such as chest stand, forearm stand and hand stands. Participants will also learn and develop personalized routines for stretching their legs and back that they can work on outside of class. Prerequisite: Instructor Approval

 

Learn the basics of handstand, the foundation of circus. Students are introduced to the three pillars of handstand—thinner, lighter, more alive—and also practice the basic handstand form. Both acrobatic and aerial students can benefit from practicing handstands.

Specially created for new students, Intro to Mixed Aerials: Level 1 introduces participants to the basics of Aerial performance. This 90-minute class combines strength and technique training on Static Trapeze, Rope, and Tissu to develop the fundamentals of movement on Aerial apparatus. People of any age and fitness level can start Intro to Mixed Aerials: Level 1 at any time. Session enrollment is encouraged.

Experienced juggler or a newbie looking to learn? Come hang out at Juggling Club and collaborate in a fun, low-pressure environment with our experienced instructor. Bring your friends and play with our juggling toys: scarves, balls, feathers, clubs and more. All levels are welcome in this FREE club!

In Juggling, Manipulation, and Balance, students will learn the basics of juggling, diabolo, and flowers sticks. Students will also test their equilibrium as they learn rolling globe, stilt-walking, rolla bola, and tight-wire.
 
 

Designed for those who wish to increase functional range of motion as quickly as possible. In this challenging class, you will not only increase your range of motion, but also strengthen the structures that provide control and stability while in your maximum ranges. This is an excellent stand-alone class and is essential for those who want to excel in their acrobatic training. This class emphasizes injury-free techniques that deliver the most effective results.

A three-person maximum trampoline class allows the more serious trampoline student more time on the apparatus.

In Rope 1, students learn basic skills on the rope. They work on building strength, control, flexibility, and discover basic locks and drops.

 

Prerequisite: Instructor approval

Students continue to develop various rope techniques, learn advanced tricks, and transition into routine development.

Single-point trapeze uses a mixture of static trapeze and aerial hoop techniques. It requires upper body strength and flexibility. Tricks include knees, toes, and heels hangs, and are performed in a dynamic manner, with the trapeze in constant motion.

 

Prerequisite: Instructor approval

 

Recommended complementary classes: Aerial Conditioning, Stretching, Physical Limitation Elimination, Flexibility for Every-Body.

 

 

Class focuses on beats, and building core and upper body strength. Students learn basic positions on and under the bar.

 

Prerequisite: Instructor approval

 

Recommended complementary classes: Aerial Conditioning, Stretching, Physical Limitation Elimination.

 

 

Students learn how to balance on the bar, moves that require strong upper body support, and body drops with ankle catch. They are also introduced to spins around the bar and ropes.

Recommended complementary classes: Aerial Conditioning, Stretching, Physical Limitation Elimination.

 

 

Static Trapeze 3 will focus on dynamic moves, drops, and routine composition.

 

Prerequisite: Instructor approval

This class is designed to develop strength and power utilizing fundamental positions and movements of aerial straps technique. Students will learn straps basic techniques while getting an excellent full-body workout at the same time.

Recommended complementary classes: Aerial Conditioning and Stretching classes.

Learn essential stretches to help improve flexibility as well as gain an understanding of the basics of stretching. This class is best for students who are just beginning to stretch and would like to acquire a strong foundation to build on.

Want to train, but aren't quite ready to get approved for IU? Then our Acro Open Gym is perfect for you! Your supervisor will assist you with equipment and keep an eye on you for safety.

This Open Gym does not feature any instruction or spotting.

Student should be comfortable training with minimal supervision.

Swinging trapeze is performed on a heavy trapeze that is in constant swinging motion. Tricks include body drops caught either by the hands, the ankles, or the heels, and occasionally combined with various pirouettes or saltos. It requires good body coordination, upper body strength, and a good sense of timing, all of which are acquired or improved during classes.

Students learn different ways to climb the silk and get stronger. They learn basic moves such as locks, holds, and drops.

Students continue to work on all Level 1 Basics, and explore and learn the various possibilities offered by the tissu through more advanced moves and transitions.

This class teaches beginning to advanced trampoline skills with an emphasis on safety, body awareness in space, and conditioning. Students will progress at their own pace and those who master the basic skills will learn inverted moves.

 

No prerequisites, but some experience with trampoline recommended.
